Floating Fixed Points 2024
Avesta Art Avesta Sweden
Created for the industrial architecture of Verket, Floating Fixed Points is a large-scale kinetic installation in which a motor draws a magnet slowly back and forth along an extended bed of iron sand. The repeated movement reorganises the dark granular surface, giving temporary visible form to a force that otherwise remains imperceptible.
The work begins with Earth’s magnetic field, generated through movement within the planet’s liquid iron-and-nickel core.
Although intangible to ordinary perception, this field extends through living and non-living matter and forms a protective envelope around the planet. It makes orientation possible while shielding life from charged particles and cosmic radiation.
The title holds stability and movement in tension. Magnetic poles appear to provide fixed coordinates, yet they are produced by a dynamic planetary system and shift across geological time.
Within the installation, the magnet never settles permanently. Its passage creates alignments in the iron sand that are continually revised by its return.Sound extends this material action through the space, while the ironworks setting brings planetary iron into relation with histories of industry and extraction. Floating Fixed Points transforms geomagnetic research into a bodily encounter with scale, repetition and invisible influence. What appears fixed is revealed as an effect of movement; what appears empty between objects is shown to be structured by active fields.
